While I prepare my Physical being eating greens and taking alteratives,  I am also paying attention to my Spiritual being and my heart by practicing more clearing ceremonies on my home and myself, including smoke clearings using my ancestral plants, and Egg, Plants, and Candle Cleansings (Limpias) as taught to me through an ongoing apprenticeship with Rocio Alvarez, Ecuadorian Curandera and Phd in Ethnobotany.

 

 

What is spiritual cleansing? It is a type of healing that seeks to identify and cure the spiritual cause for any problem that is manifesting in your life. This can also be thought of as an energy clearing or energy hygeine. Spiritual cleansing techniques are used to clear negative energy and improve your welbeing.

Spiritual cleansing is based on the concept that everything is energy: humans, thoughts, plants, rocks, light, emotions, animals, space… everything. Energies impact and change each other.  Spiritual cleansing isn’t limited to human beings. Since everything is energy, you can periodically do a spiritual cleanse on your home, car, workplace, objects you own, places you spend time in, etc. – basically anything occasionally needs a sprucing up.

A “limpia" or spiritual cleansing, is used to cleanse the body, mind and soul of stagnation, or negativity. Spiritual cleansing can be defined as spiritual hygiene – cleaning yourself from unwanted energies that we collect in each day of our life. It’s a matter of hygiene – just as you take a shower each day,  it's beneficial to cleanse yours energy body/aura regularly. An aura is an energy field that surrounds every living being. As we move through our life, our aura is our basic defense, protecting us from negative energies and weaker entities /attachments that fly all around us, all the time. As we move through life and get hit with powerful all types of powerful energies, our aura becomes weaker and sometimes cracking  allowing these energies to enter us. Every living thing on Earth collects different energies on a daily basis.

You can use spiritual cleansing for: feelings of hurt, guilt, fear, shame, anger, resentment and sadness can be hard to get rid of and can easily manifest in physical problems), ’bad energy’, ‘bad vibes’ or unexplained disturbances or lack of well-being in a home or work place,  to remove a persistent feeling of negative, heavy energy surrounding you.

 

What is the process?

A whole fertilized egg, that has been “charged” on an bed of seeds, candles and crystals is passed over the body in a scrubbing motion. I begin at the crown of the head and end at the soles of both feet. It is done fully clothed and in the standing position, when possible.When using the egg you are essential going through the person’s aura, and body, pinpointing specific areas if necessary, and allowing the eggs sponge like properties to absorb the energy. The egg traps the energy. The negativity transfers from you, to the egg. The final step, is breaking the egg it into a glass of water, reading it and then disposing of the shells and egg. 

This technique of spiritual cleansing using an egg is connected to many different cultures and traditions because the egg  has long been regarded as symbol of life and seeds potential.

I am feeling a deep need to reconnect with the Earth, the Sun, the Water and the Breeze. To have my feet, my souls touch the earth in prayer, To move, to shed, to invigorate every part of my being. I can hardly wait until my daily deck lunch time ritual salad contains chickweed, violets, dandelions, ground ivy and a few baby mugwort leaves! I craving wild greens with my eyes and internally greens rich in chlorophyl, and vitamins, lighter foods, more vital foods and herbs that fall under the category of "alteratives"- the movers and shakers of the herbal world.

In Gratitude, the gift of health and a calling!

Where to start... As always in gratitude for the opportunities I am given in this life, to share my passion for the plants and the healing they offer with all of you.

It all began back in May, I was looking for the next step in my learning and spiritual growth. I am committed to taking a class or attending a conference every year that offers me a new perspective and keep to my work fresh. This year, my 13th year of teaching herbalism full-time, I was looking for  something different, something smaller, more intense and personal.  I noticed a class being offered at Partner Earth Education Center, the home of Pam Montgomery and Mark Carlin called  Plant Communication; Reclaiming Our Birthrite, It seemed to be an opportunity to spend an entire weekend with a single plant in deep communion. The workshop was just what I needed!  Deep connection with Angelica for three days, plant spirit medicine.

An added benefit to being back at Partner Earth was the opportunity to reconnect with Pam, during conversation she mentioned that Rocio Alcaron was going to be  there the following month teaching an intensive called The Shamanic Path; Living a Daily Spiritual Life in Kinship with Nature . The moment she mentioned it I knew that I had to be there!

August 29th saw me picking Zoe up from school early and driving back to Danby. I was being pulled there and still I was not clear why... I just knew it was what I had to do and I learnt a while ago there was no use in fighting a calling, logistically  it was a nightmare, Zoe had just began school for the year, Rock the Moon was just weeks away, Ashfield Fall Fest was a little over a month away. I made my way up to Danby in quiet prayer, in gratitude also that Zoe was willing to accompany me one more time.

The next 4 days were life changing. 

Plant Limpias, Candle and Egg Limpias, Spiritual plant bathing, Breast Massage, Structural hip closings, magical trips to the Pugyos, all in Ceremony while healing and caring for an amazing group of healers that gathered in Danby to receive Rocios teachings. Rocio gave her heart and soul and touched us all in unexpected ways. 

I knew that this was just the beginning.  I took on the practice of  daily"Limpias" spiritual cleansings using plants and occasionally candles. Weekly breast massages with the luxuarious cacao ylang ylang paste we were gifted. I have journeyed with cacao, and in my work with plants noticed a common thread, an urgency, in asking us to step up now.

So when  Rocio put out the call last week for us to continue our studies at her home in Ecuador this coming February. I knew I had to act. What a dream come true , What a gift to be able to continue this work with Rocio at her home in the Amazon, to be allowed  to take my work to the next level with a teacher I have come to respect greatly in a short time. To add to this dream Rocio extended the call to Zoe! Again the logistics make NO sense...distance, financial challenges and school but again I have no doubt that Zoe and I will be boarding a plane to Ecuador in February! It is our calling, our great opportunity. What a blessing also to be able to share this work with my community and in my classes.

We are not in Japan, Egypt or Libya or even Wisconsin. For this I have Gratitude. Even better we live in a small town full of like-minded people. More reason for gratitude. A huge portion of the food we eat is locally grown by farmers we call friends. The general mindset is one of DIY, fix it, and help your neighbors. Still like so many others these economic times have hit us hard in a little over a month we have to move, leave our home of 11 years and we have still not found a place we can afford.

 

Recently I got to thinking (again) about sustainability and ways of becoming more self reliant (next step chickens and beekeeping). Sticking point is still reliance on my vehicle!      This time I got to thinking about sustainable medicine, how so much as been said about growing/preserving your own food, eating local, seed saving, there has been less emphasis on locally grown/manufactured DIY medicine.  Thinking of your families health care as a skill that can be learnt as opposed to relying on professionals.  While we have talked about the benefit of using plants that are local and part of our home ecosystem, every step in the process of herbal medicine making from growing and gathering, to tincturing, to family care can be taken on as part of the family homestead whether urban or rural. It can is a project that the whole family can participate in, at the same time gaining skills in personal health promotion. Herbal medicines are not only a source for treating disease they are also a source for promoting health for your family and community health by reducing the number of trips to a family practice, travel time, energy consumption, pharmaceutical company support.

 In solidarity with the sustainable farming movement, it is important that we begin to make local choices regarding our family health-care. Here is where I see my role as a community herbalist to teach  people the art of herbal medicine, and to encourage the practice of community based herbalism.
